LGS Spotlight: Gabi’s Olympic Cards and Comics in Lacey

by guest writer Kenton M.

Gabi’s Olympic Cards and Comics has a heart that’s bigger than its building. This past weekend, the Lacey-based store hosted a Star Wars: Destiny Washington Prime Championship for the second year in a row.

At the age of 18, Gabi Trautman bought Olympic Cards and Comics (OCC)—a shop she had been visiting since she was 5 years old. Over the last 25 years, Gabi has gone above and beyond to create a successful retail space that is the cornerstone of her community.

OCC has been supporting the Star Wars: Destiny community since the game released in 2016, and has hosted a progressive sealed league for every new set since Way of the Force debuted in 2018. The Destiny community meets at OCC biweekly for casual play when a league is not taking place.

OCC features nearly 7,000 square feet of retail space on its lower level and over 2,500 square feet of gaming and cafe space upstairs. Customers are able to browse the store’s many products, which include graphic novels, toys, board games, card games, gaming supplies, and other related collectibles. Additionally, any shoppers in need of a rest can head to the “Living Room” space on the top floor where they can relax on a couch and let their little ones use the kids play area.

There is no limit to the tasks Gabi will take on to show love and support to anyone who needs it—she goes out of her way to make everyone who comes into the store feel safe and accepted. Gabi’s Olympic Cards and Comics has become an extension of how its owner impacts the world and community around her.

Year-round, the store is a donation site for food, school supplies, and Christmas gifts. The giving doesn’t stop there, however—Gabi, her husband, the staff, and customers adopt local families in need. This past year, they helped over 100 families! Gabi’s charity Gabi’s Kids also raises money for local foster children. Patrons can schedule and use the upstairs area at OCC to host fundraising events for any number of charitable causes.

This is all in addition to running an amazing, successful, and family-friendly store. OCC has something for everyone, and it always feels like home!
